Personality:
Luna Lovegood is often considered strange by others. She is described by Ron Weasley as mad, but in a good way. She is isolated, as since she entered school not many people seemed to care to spend time with her as her unusual views of things confused them. She doesn't care much what others think about her though- for example while she is fully aware of the nickname she was given, "Loony" she doesn't care much though most of the students know her by that name.
Even with friends, Luna is rather much of at outcast. Luna is not accepted for the beliefs she holds that no one apart from her father seems to believe, and also for her quirky ways and, to a point, for being the daughter of the editor of The Quibbler. She does not let this disturb her much though, as it is hard to annoy or anger Luna if even possible.
Luna often is optimistic, and even if she does look on the dark side of things it is in a brighter way than one many would. Due to this she can cheer up people by just being herself, she doesn't even have to try.
Luna values her friends more than many others would, because of her lack of having them in her earlier years. She even has a painting of Ron, Harry, Hermione, Ginny and Neville all interlinked by small gold words friends. She understands people much better than your would expect simply by observing them and imagining herself in their situation. She offers her views which are often helpful

Description:
Luna is unconventionally pretty with long, dirty blond hair that reaches her waist normally left loose to fall gracefully down her back. Matching her hair is her very pale eyebrows. Her eyes are silvery and rather misty, both of which give her a definite dazed appearance. They are slightly protuberant, giving them a permanently surprised look on her face. She often wears a necklace of Butterbeer corks and orange radish earrings, both of which attracts stares.
Everything put together rather makes people avoid her unless they are her friends. When she takes off the necklace and earrings, and her wand isn't stuck behind her ear though she tends to look very pretty, especially if she is wearing silver dresses. Silver clothes tend to bring out her eyes and make her look much nicer than if she is wearing her normal clothes.
History:
Luna's parents were always important people in her life. She always looked up to them, especially her dad though she was equally close to both of them. Luna and her mom had a true connection as mother and daughter of love. To Luna, her mom was an extraordinary witch who tampered with magic in interesting ways. Unfortunately, one day one of her mom's spell experiments went horrible wrong. It cost her mom her life. Even worse was that Luna herself had witnessed it. For the first time in her life Luna's carefree world crashed down around her. Her whole life had changed in that one moment.
At Hogwarts she saw the thestrals that most others could not. When she pointed them out everyone just gave her strange looks. Over the years her beliefs, taught to her by her dad, seemed to make people think she was mental. She would receive bewildered or scathing looks and was known as Loony rather than Luna. Still, Luna didn't let any of it disturb her. Why should she? She was comfortable with herself...it didn't both her what others thought.
In her fourth year, however, she finally found friendships with five fellow students one of which was in her year, and all of which were Gryffindors. She became a part of the DA, which was one of the best things that had happened to her at Hogwarts. That year she had battled Death Eaters in the Ministry of Magic beside them. Since that they all formed a friendship with her. When Harry's Godfather died she offered her views of it which seemed to lift his spirits a little. Over the next few years she was never best friends with any of them, but they became close. She even had a painting in her room of them.
At the beginning of her fifth year, on her train ride to Hogwarts a few girls seemed to think Luna and Neville as unsuitable to sit with Harry. Luna realised that her and Neville weren't cool, and people expected Harry to lime with cooler people than them. With honesty she relayed this to him and he told them they were cool. She felt rather cheerful after this. That year she went to a Christmas party with Harry, purely as a friend and kept many people laughing throughout it. She did regret not dying her eyebrows though with her wand, but Harry had told her not to...
The end of her fifth year was sorrowful as Hogwarts lost its headmaster. Many thought he was the best ever. When she returned for her sixth year, she didn't find Hogwarts quite so pleasant though.
Role Play Example: (at least 3 paragraphs)
Luna walked, thought it more looked as if she was skipping, onto the grounds of Hogwarts. As she headed for the lake she paused by the Whomping Willow. It was a curious tree, really, the way it attacked people. She remembered in her second year hearing that Harry's broom smashed into it. As he had gotten a new broom she expected it was true. She wondered why it attacked people. She had asked her dad and he had reckoned that it was infested with Blibbering Humdingers...they were supposed to be invisible so she couldn't tell.
She skipped her way off to the direction of the lake. She smiled at a few Ravenclaws on the way but they simply ignored her. A few of the DA members waved at her and she smiled at them, her silvery eyes shining with happiness that at least they didn't ignore her, even around others. Her dirty blond hair blew about slightly in the wind as she reached the lake, and stretched out under the beech tree she had taken quite a liking too. She had seen Harry, Ron and Hermione, and sometimes Harry and Ginny under it quite a few times.
She put her elbows on the ground so the formed roughly a U shape and rested her chin on the palms of her hands. She stared out into the lake, wondering if Aquavirius Maggots were in there...who knew? There was a giant squid after all. She sighed lightly, ignoring the dirty looks she got from the Slytherins, and even some Ravenclaws.
